EMDR

Holding on is believing that there’s only a past; letting go is knowing that there’s a future.

~Daphne Rose Kingma

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapeutic approach that helps your brain to reprocess disturbing past events so that you may heal and adapt in a more positive way to life around you.

Feeling stuck is a burden

Your mind and your body suffer from that stuck sensation sometimes. It can feel not just emotional but physical – as if you’re trapped and weighed down.

Even when life appears to be going well, unhealthy patterns, fears, bad choices, and old anxieties seem to play on repeat in the background of your life.

When triggered, you often find yourself trying to make a change in some way to cope, but it never really works long term – you always seem to have “issues.”

You are tired of feeling stuck, and you are especially tired of wondering if life will always be this way.

The Breakdown

These types of challenges can be due to the harmful inner beliefs we hold about ourselves.

These beliefs form when life events that make you feel unloved, unsafe, out of control, humiliated, abandoned, etc. are so overwhelming that your brain “freezes” instead of processing and integrating the experience into a narrative that you can understand.

In a sense, your brain created a template about how to handle those overwhelming sensations in the future… but it isn’t complete. Now you’re stuck with some really hurtful misconceptions about yourself.

It’s my fault.
I am wrong/bad.
I am not safe.
I am not in control.
I have to be perfect.
I am not good enough.

When you are reminded of those experiences – this means people, situations, sights, sounds, smells, textures, feelings… all fair game – your brain may take out those incomplete templates and tell you how to react… fight, flight or freeze.

So – it’s possible that you are reacting to your present using incomplete data from your past – and I bet you’re exhausted.

Let It Go with EMDR

EMDR is an approved and effective treatment for symptoms of PTSD – but that’s not all!

Research suggests that the stress of life events over time can have the same impact on your emotional health as traumatic events.

Using guided, bilateral stimulation, EMDR can help you to reprocess those events and adapt in a more positive way to natural life stressors. They are going to happen, so let’s be ready for them!
